Fall 2020 John Jay Fellow

Hometown: Spokane, WA
College: George Fox University
Degree: B.S. Biology, B.A. Political Science

Katherine Cvancara graduated from George Fox University in 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in Biology and Political Science and completion of GFU’s Great Works Honors Program. A microbe and absurdism enthusiast, Kate deeply values finding unexpected connections to promote a more relational—and thus more just—society. Her studies of the intersections between science, politics, and faith have driven her to publish with the American Enterprise Institute, Competitive Enterprise Institute, and CUTIS Frontline Medical Communications, as well as craft a senior thesis on how the absurdist must answer injustice.

Kate was active on the George Fox campus through American Enterprise Institute’s executive council program, the Intercollegiate Studies Institute chapter, and the John Dickinson fellows, where she participated and organized multiple politics events. Serving as Dr. Mark David Hall’s research assistant for two years also exposed Kate to a wide array of extracurricular honors and fellowship programs. Kate was granted George Fox’s woman in STEM leadership award, AEI Honors and Associate Scholar postgraduate scholarship award, the Politics Department Gifted Servant Leader award, and the Discovery Institute Center for Science and Culture award. Starting her college career as a surgical assistant and EMT, Kate has maintained an eclectic set of experiences that she hopes enriches the discussion during the John Jay Fellows program.

Currently, Kate is working in D.C. as a writer for the Institute of Religion and Democracy. After her time at John Jay, Kate will apply to law school where she hopes to help those left behind by technological advancements. She recently completed her second science fiction short story that offers a space for processing current political tensions.
