Fall 2021 John Jay Fellow
Hometown: Bryan, TX
College: Baylor University
Degree: B.A. University Scholars Program
Collin Slowey received his B.A. from Baylor University in May 2021. He studied in the Honors College in the University Scholars program, concentrating in Political Science, Great Texts, and Film and Digital Media. Collin’s principal academic focus was political philosophy. He wrote his Honors Thesis under Dr. David D. Corey on the application of just war theory to domestic political “wars” (e.g., the culture war). A modified version of this project won a 2020–2021 Young Scholar Award from the American Enterprise Institute (AEI).
While a student, Collin participated in the Baylor in Washington semester program, living in Washington, D.C. for four months and working full-time as an intern at the Center for Public Justice (CPJ). After returning to Baylor, he continued to work with CPJ on a for-pay basis and ultimately published an article about mass incarceration in the organization’s premiere journal, Public Justice Review. In the summer after his junior year, Collin interned at AEI’s Initiative on Faith and Public Life and participated in the initial cohort of the Institute’s Summer Associates Program. The following fall, he helped found an independent student newspaper at Baylor, for which he wrote a regular column.
Over the past nine months, Collin has been working as an independent writer on politics, religion, and culture. His work has been published in The American Conservative, The Dallas Morning News, and Public Discourse, among other outlets. He hopes to continue his career in writing after completing his time at John Jay.
