Josiah Hasbrouck

Fall 2023 John Jay Fellow

Hometown: Gorham, ME
College: Cairn University
Degree: B.A. Politics, Minors in Bible and Philosophy

Josiah Hasbrouck graduated from Cairn University in May 2023, tied for the highest GPA in his graduating class. While at Cairn, Josiah participated in the university Honors Program, integrating his Politics major with his Bible and Philosophy minors to write a senior Honors thesis on natural law in 16th-18th century Protestant thought. The project was also sponsored by the American Enterprise Institute’s Initiative for Faith and Public Life Young Scholars Program.

When he wasn’t studying, Josiah was active in Cairn’s community, participating in several extracurriculars. He held office in the university’s Student Government Association for both of his upperclassman years at Cairn, successfully passing major amendments to SGA’s Constitution during his one semester as Student Body President. He received Cairn’s annual Outstanding Student Leader Award at the conclusion of that semester. Josiah was also actively involved in various other campus activities including Chorale, Chamber Singers, History Club, and Souder Housing Community.

Outside of Cairn, Josiah has also served as a Development Intern for the Maine Policy Institute and a Summer Intern for the John Jay Institute. Most recently, he interned with the Institute on Religion and Democracy in Washington, DC, where he frequently wrote about the intersection of Christianity and public life for the organization’s blog. Josiah worked with John Jay alumni at each of these internships, and is very excited to participate in the program himself.

In his free time, Josiah enjoys music, memes, walks, late-night Taco Bell runs with the boys, thrifting, and discussing the metanarrative of Taylor Swift’s discography.

After John Jay, Josiah hopes to pursue graduate study in theology, philosophy, and ethics.
