During his time at Whitworth, Kyle came to serve as the Editor-in-Chief and Editor-in-Chief emeritus of The Whitworthian, Whitworth’s campus newspaper, for three years becoming one of the longest serving Editor-in-Chiefs in The Whitworthian’s 118-year history. He has been credited with saving, revitalizing, and turning The Whitworthian into a standard of journalistic excellence and respectability within the Whitworth community. Kyle also served as President of Whitworth’s History Club in his final two years on campus. He is also a member of Phi Alpha Theta, the American honor society for undergraduate and graduate students and professors of history.
As an undergraduate, Kyle presented original research papers at both the Spokane Intercollegiate Research Conference and at the Phi Alpha Theta Pacific Northwest Conference as a conference panelist. These papers mirrored Kyle’s primary interest in American history, both political and writ large through analysis of the Vietnam War and its impact on the Whitworth community, to an examination of the sociocultural understanding of freedom in the American context through the lens of the Federalist Papers. He has also written senior papers with focuses on neo-liberalism in Africa and the role of religion in the field of Women’s History.
Outside of the academic world, Kyle has served as an intern at the campaign office of Congresswoman Cathy McMorris-Rodgers, focusing on connecting with constituents of Washington’s 5th congressional district through fundraising and local events supporting Congresswoman McMorris-Rodgers and other local civil servants of the greater Spokane area. He has also served as an intern at the UA Local 598 Plumbers and Steamfitters through the Washington State Labor Council. Working with the Director of Governmental Affairs, Kyle focused on researching legislation relating to the continued safety and benefit of tradespeople within Washington, while helping to craft the framework for new legislation aimed at streamlining the relationship between state labor agencies.
In his free time, Kyle enjoys grilling, spending time with his family, and working his way through the completed works of Tom Clancy, of which The Hunt for Red October is his favorite. Following his time at John Jay, Kyle intends to pursue a position in policy analysis and a graduate level degree in political science.
