Fall 2024 John Jay Fellow

Hometown: Holland, TX
College: University of Mary Hardin-Baylor
Degree: B.A. in Economics, Minor in Mathematics

A native Texan, Mark Howell graduated from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (UMHB) in 2024 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Economics and a minor in Mathematics. During his time at university, Mark engaged in academic research and tutored classes for the McLane College of Business. He was also a tenor saxophonist for the Temple College Jazz Ensemble and was involved with the Young Conservatives of Texas UMHB Chapter and the UMHB Economics Club. During his senior year at UMHB, Mark met the love of his life and now fiancée, Zanthe.

Mark grew up in Central Texas, enjoying life in the country and being homeschooled alongside his siblings. In his free time, he enjoys learning new things, playing jazz on the saxophone or piano, and spending time with his fiancée.

Mark is interested in a career in public policy and economics. His first experience with public policy was during his internship at the Texas Public Policy Foundation, which introduced him to the complex world of healthcare policy and developed his passion for U.S. domestic policy. During the summer of 2024, he interned for the Young Leaders Program at The Heritage Foundation. He was also an American Statecraft Fellow at the Institute of World Politics and an Apprentice at the Mises Institute.

Mark is confident that the John Jay Institute Fellowship will make him a better disciple of Christ and a better friend to his neighbors. Following his time at the John Jay Institute, he plans to join the conservative movement by working in public policy and eventually attending graduate school to study economics.
